Privacy policy

Understood In

One privacy policy for every Understood In language app, on iOS and Android.

Effective: September 6, 2026Last updated: October 28, 2026

The Understood In apps — today Understood In Spanish, with more languages to follow, all built on the same engine — (“Understood In,” “the app,” “we,” “us”) are made by Olivia Renee Studio, LLC. This policy applies to every Understood In app and to the understoodin.com website. It explains what information they handle, how it is used, and the choices you have, and it was written against what the apps actually do, not from a template. Questions? Please use our contact form.

The short version

  • There is no account. The whole course is inside the app, and your progress — lessons, streaks, review schedule, custom cards — is stored only on your device. We cannot see it.
  • The apps use no analytics, crash-reporting or tracking SDKs, and we do not sell personal information.
  • If your language does not have every level yet, you can tap Request the next levels. The app then sends us only the app's name, your explanation language, the level you asked for, your platform and the app version — nothing that identifies you.
  • Speaking practice uses your phone's speech recognition, only when you tap the microphone. Nothing is recorded or kept.
  • The free version shows ads (Google AdMob), which involves advertising identifiers. Understood In Pro removes ads entirely.
  • Subscriptions are handled by Apple or Google. We never receive payment details.

1. What Stays on Your Device

Everything you do in the app is stored locally on your phone or tablet and is never sent to us, apart from a level request if you choose to send one (section 2). That includes your completed lessons and scores, XP and streaks, the spaced-repetition schedule of every word you have learned, your misses, custom flashcards and quizzes, the words and verbs you have starred, the stories, parallel stories, conversations and dialogues you have finished and how far you have read in each parallel story, your chosen languages, voice and reading settings, and any reminders you set. Because nothing is synced to us, we cannot recover it for you: if you delete the app, that data is gone unless your own device backup (iCloud, Google) includes it or you exported it (Settings → Export progress).

2. What We Do Not Collect

  • No account, email address, name, or password — the app has no sign-up.
  • No analytics, attribution, or crash-reporting libraries. We do not measure how you use the app.
  • No location, contacts, photos, calendar, or health data — the app never asks for those permissions.
  • No audio recordings — see section 3.
  • No payment details — see section 6.

Level requests. Where your explanation language does not yet have every level, the app shows a Request the next levels button. Only if you tap it does the app send understoodin.com the app's name, your explanation language, the level you requested, your platform (iOS or Android) and the app version. We store those values with the date, as a count, to decide which languages get their next levels first. We do not store your IP address, country or any identifier, so a request cannot be linked to you. A request made offline waits on your device until the app next opens with a connection. Cloudflare, which hosts understoodin.com, processes the request's IP address to deliver it, as it does for any visit to the site (see section 8). Sending a request is your choice; our legal basis for handling it is our legitimate interest in planning the course (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).

Apple and Google may show us aggregate crash and performance diagnostics in their developer dashboards, but only if you have turned on diagnostic sharing at the operating-system level.

3. Speaking Practice and the Microphone

Speaking exercises are optional: you can skip every one of them, and if you decline the microphone permission the app skips them for you. When you tap Tap & speak, the app listens until you stop or pause, compares what was recognized with the target sentence, and shows you the result. The app does not store recordings or transcripts — the recognized text is used for that one exercise and discarded.

  • iPhone and iPad: recognition uses Apple's Speech framework. When your device supports on-device recognition for the language being taught (most recent iPhones do), the audio is processed on the device and does not leave it. On devices that do not, Apple's speech recognition service processes the audio under Apple's privacy policy.
  • Android: recognition uses your device's speech recognition service — typically Google's. Depending on the device and its installed language packs, that service may process the audio on Google's servers under Google's privacy policy.

Audio you hear in lessons is produced by your device's built-in text-to-speech voices; no audio is downloaded from us.

4. Ads in the Free Version

The free version shows ads served by Google AdMob: a banner on the Learn and Review screens and on the practice lists (Stories, Parallel Stories, Conversations, Dialogues, Flashcards, Quizzes and the Conjugation Gym), and an occasional full-screen ad after you finish a lesson, Smart Review, the Daily Workout, a quiz, a Conjugation Gym drill, a story, a parallel story, a conversation or a dialogue. Ads never appear during one, and never after flashcards. To serve, cap and measure ads and to detect fraud, Google may process your device's advertising identifier (the IDFA on iOS, the Advertising ID on Android), IP address, and limited device and usage signals. On iOS the app also registers SKAdNetwork, Apple's privacy-preserving system for measuring ad-driven installs without identifying you. How Google uses this information is described in Google's advertising policy.

Ads for our own apps. When Google has no ad to show, for example without an internet connection or in a country where Google serves no ads, Understood In shows an ad for one of our own apps in its place. These ads are part of Understood In: they load nothing from other companies and send nothing to anyone. Tapping one opens that app's page in the App Store or Google Play. The link carries a campaign label naming Understood In and the place in the app where the ad appeared, so we can count the downloads that came from it; it doesn't identify you. Once you are in the store, Apple's or Google's privacy policy applies, and that app's own policy once you install it.

Your choices:

  • Consent (EEA, UK, Switzerland). Before ads load, the app asks for your choice through Google's User Messaging Platform. Change or withdraw it any time in Settings → Privacy options, a row that appears where consent rules require it.
  • App Tracking Transparency (iOS). iOS asks whether the app may track you across other companies' apps and websites. Declining makes ads less relevant; it does not remove them. Change your mind in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
  • Android. Reset or delete your Advertising ID, or opt out of ad personalization, in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads.
  • Remove ads. Understood In Pro removes all ads, ours included, and no lesson or feature is ever locked behind it. When the app knows you have Pro, it doesn't start Google's advertising software or ask for ad consent or, on iOS, tracking permission.

A note for U.S. state privacy laws: we do not sell your data, but personalized advertising through Google AdMob may count as “sharing” or a “sale” for cross-context behavioral advertising under laws such as California's CCPA/CPRA. The controls above turn it off, and Pro removes advertising entirely.

5. Learning Content

The course was written by AI and checked with automated tests and AI review, not by a human linguist. Lessons are explained in the language you choose in the app; the translations other than English are machine-generated. This is disclosed inside the app. Your choice of language is a setting stored on your device. It is sent only with a level request you choose to make (see section 2), never with anything that identifies you.

6. Purchases

Understood In Pro is a subscription sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google processes the payment and holds the receipt; the app only learns whether the subscription is active and remembers that on your device so ads stay off. We receive no name, email or payment-card details, and nothing about your purchase is sent to any server of ours. Manage or cancel in your App Store or Google Play account settings; the full terms (price, length, auto-renewal) are shown on the upgrade screen before you buy. Each Understood In app is sold separately.

7. Reminders, Widgets and Backups

  • Reminders are optional local notifications scheduled on your device (a daily reminder at a time you choose and a 9 pm streak nudge). There is no push service; nothing about a reminder leaves your phone.
  • Home-screen widgets read your streak, due-word count and a word of the day from the app's local storage on the same device.
  • Export / Import progress writes a file that you choose where to save or send. It contains your progress data only, and nothing is uploaded to us in the process.

8. Our Websites

The Understood In marketing site (understoodin.com) is a static site hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data about each request, including your IP address, the page requested and your browser's user agent, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We rely on our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website, and Cloudflare acts on our behalf under its Data Processing Addendum (privacy policy). The site sets no cookies.

Analytics. To see which pages are read, how people find the site and how quickly pages load, understoodin.com uses Cloudflare Web Analytics. When it runs, a small Cloudflare script reports the page you visited (without any query string), the site that linked you there and page-load timings, and Cloudflare works out your country, device type and browser from the request. It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, does not fingerprint your device and does not follow you across websites or over time. We only ever see totals.

  • In the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, it runs only if you choose Allow in the banner. If you decline, or don't choose, the script never loads. Our legal basis is your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a), and the rules on reading information from your device, such as § 25 TDDDG in Germany).
  • Everywhere else, it runs by default, based on our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site, and you can switch it off.

To decide which applies, the site asks our server whether your request comes from one of those regions. The answer is based on the country Cloudflare already determines from your IP address, and nothing about it is stored. If your location can't be determined, we ask for consent. You can change your choice at any time with Privacy Choices at the bottom of every understoodin.com page; withdrawing consent doesn't affect statistics collected before you withdrew it. Cloudflare keeps detailed analytics data for 7 days; after that only a reduced sample of about 10% is kept, and our dashboard shows at most the last six months.

Free lessons on understoodin.com. You can try the first level of Understood In Spanish in your browser at understoodin.com/learn, without an account. To show your progress, the lesson pages save the best score of each lesson you finish in your browser's local storage. That information stays on your device: we never receive it, and it is not linked to you. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser. The lessons do not use your microphone. The App Store and Google Play buttons on these pages carry a campaign label, so Apple and Google can tell us how many downloads started there; they share only totals with us.

Browser storage. The site remembers your analytics choice for about six months (analytics-consent), its tutorial remembers your iOS/Android and language choices (tutorial-platform, tutorial-language), and the free lessons keep your scores (understoodin-learn-v1). All four stay in your browser's local storage on your device and are not used for tracking.

Store buttons. The App Store and Google Play buttons carry a campaign label (such as ct=web_hero) that tells us which button was used; it doesn't identify you. Apple's or Google's own privacy policies apply once you are in their store.

Cloudflare transfers personal data from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, its UK extension and the Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, with standard contractual clauses as the fallback. A content blocker also stops the analytics script without affecting the site.

The page you are reading is on oliviarenee.app, our studio site, which is served from a DigitalOcean server behind Cloudflare. Unlike the apps, oliviarenee.app uses Google Analytics — but only after you accept it in the cookie banner. If you decline, or have not yet chosen, no analytics cookie is set. What is stored and how to change your choice are set out in our Cookie Policy. Its hosting providers see your IP address and standard request data when a page is served, and its fonts are served from oliviarenee.app itself.

9. Who We Share Information With

We hold no personal information about you, so there is nothing of ours to share. The third parties that process data in the course of using the app are the ones named above:

  • Google — AdMob and the User Messaging Platform in the free version; on Android, the device's speech recognition service, and Google Play distribution and billing.
  • Apple — speech recognition where it is not on-device, and App Store distribution and billing.
  • Cloudflare — receives a level request if you send one (see section 2), as the host of understoodin.com.
  • Our website hosts and Cloudflare Web Analytics — see section 8.

We would disclose information if required by law, but in practice we have none to disclose.

10. Children

Understood In is a general-audience language course and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you are a parent and believe a child has used the app in a way that concerns you, please contact us and we will help; ad behavior is governed by the consent and identifier controls in section 4.

11. Your Rights and Choices

  • Access, export, delete — your data is on your device. Export it with Settings → Export progress, erase it with Settings → Reset progress, or delete the app.
  • Ads — the consent, tracking and advertising-ID controls in section 4.
  • Depending on where you live (for example the EEA/UK under the GDPR, or U.S. states such as California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or port personal data, to object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent. On understoodin.com, you can give, change or withdraw your analytics choice at any time with Privacy Choices at the bottom of every page. Because we do not hold personal data, requests will usually concern Google's advertising data, which you control through the settings above; for anything else, please use our contact form. We will not treat you differently for exercising a right, and you may complain to your local data-protection authority.

12. Data Retention and Security

We retain nothing that identifies you. The only thing the app can send us is a level request you choose to make, which we keep as an anonymous count (see section 2). Data on your device stays until you reset it or delete the app. Advertising data is retained by Google according to its policies. The app communicates with the internet only for ads and consent (free version), store purchases and pages, and any level request you send, all over encrypted connections.

13. Changes to This Policy

If we change this policy, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated date. If a change materially affects how the app handles your information, the app's Settings will point you here.
